The Psychology of Office Spaces
The concept of psychology and office spaces seems a bit peculiar, but in our society this is a prominent issue companies face when planning stages of a redesign or a new workspace. Offices or work spaces today are not your Father’s old office space but an evolution of sorts affected by the truly diverse mixture of generations working together in the same space.
Each generation comes with it’s own unique set of work style preferences; the generations of today (Gen X and Gen Y) come with the added element of how they are influenced by today’s technology advances, connections and how they have changed the way we communicate.
Companies need to ask themselves a few questions when in the process of planning their design:
- What does your office space say about you and your company?
- Ask yourself, what do your employees and clients think/see/feel when they enter the space?
Companies are challenged today to hire the very best individuals, make sure they stay (attraction and retention) and to develop an environment that supports the company’s culture and mission all within a workspace where each type of employee (no matter what age or generational category) feels comfortable. Productivity must also be taken into account, so the workspace should make each employee effective – keep the tools they need easy access to on-hand, allow for easy group collaboration, natural light, etc.
The benefits will be apparent. As companies move to maximize the efficiency of their workspace, it will encourage creativity, promote problem solving and embrace group communication resulting in increased overall productivity rates and decreased employee loss/turnover and, more than likely, physical and mental health issues.
